My Generation 2010

“My Generation” illustrates the frustrated expectations of gratification when technology breaks down during a computer game. Here the classical drama of western cultural history of the mind versus the body focuses on the failure and collapse of a machine: because the screen has remained silent and refused to allow access to the game, young people who are addicted to gaming are seized by destructive desperation.

The floor sculpture includes components from a smashed up computer and a single channel video, which plays on a monitor that has been tipped over but has remained intact. It shows film clips of kids and young people who freak out in violent outbursts of anger because they are unable to continue playing their computer games as a result of technical problems. Eva and Franco Mattes collected these secretly filmed clips from YouTube and assembled them to create a compilation.
